This is going to be my personal website, where I write about random things I’m interested in.
I don’t want anything fancy. Quite the opposite: I want this website to look and feel barebones.
The best information on the internet comes from barebones websites. If I need a basic bit of information, like how many calories are in an apple, and I come across a website with big UI elements and ads and it takes seconds to load and it asks me to log in with Google, I know I’m not going to get a straight answer. In fact, it’s very likely this page will waste my time for as long as possible.
But if I come across a simple static HTML page that loads instantly, I’m usually getting a straight forward answer quickly.
I don’t want to sell anything on here or promote myself. I just want to post interesting information that others may or may not find useful, that’s all. I like doing stuff with cars and old tech. I like sailing but I don’t currently own a boat. I also like skiing and waterskiing. So there’s plenty of things to post about.
Search engine optimization (SEO) and Google’s reluctance to adequately combat it has made finding good information on the internet much harder. Search engines are quickly becoming useless and I predict they will eventually become entirely obsolete in favor of AI. Even when building this website, I found asking ChatGPT to be much more to-the-point than the many Hugo tutorials you can find using Google/YouTube. One notable exception is this one, which forgoes downloading some random creator’s custom template and just gives you what you need to render simple HTML pages. Many thanks to the author for getting me started. That is an example of a good website.
